About
Robert J. Loewenberg is a historian and political scientist who earned his BA from Columbia University in 1962, served three years in the U.S. Navy, and taught for several years at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, before completing his PhD at Yale University in 1972. He has also served as a professor of history at Arizona State University. He is the founder and president of the Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies (IASPS), established in 1984 in Jerusalem after he made aliyah to Israel, with an affiliated office in Washington, D.C. Under his leadership, IASPS produced influential neoconservative policy papers for Israel, including the 1996 "A Clean Break" policy paper advocating a hawkish strategic shift under Benjamin Netanyahu. The institute has been known for promoting neoconservative policies critical of the peace process and U.S. administrations, including that of Barack Obama. Loewenberg authored several books, including 'Equality on the Oregon Frontier: Jason Lee and the Methodist Mission, 1834-43' (1976), 'An American Idol: Emerson and the "Jewish Idea"' (1984), 'Freedom's Despots: The Critique of Abolition' (1986), and co-edited 'The Israeli Fate of Jewish Liberalism' (1985). He has contributed opinion pieces to major outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Times, and served on the board of the Society of Americans for National Existence (SANE), an anti-Islamic advocacy group. Loewenberg has resided in Rockville and Potomac, Maryland, near the IASPS U.S. office. There are no documented major legal controversies or personal scandals associated with him.
