About
Naomi Elaine Campbell, born May 22, 1970, in Streatham, South London, England, is a British supermodel, actress, singer, author, and philanthropist. She attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts stage school and began her modeling career at age 15 after appearing in music videos for artists like Bob Marley and Culture Club. Campbell achieved pioneering status as the first Black woman to appear on the covers of Time (1989) and Vogue France (1988), and has featured on over 500 magazine covers while walking runways for Versace, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Louis Vuitton. She has released music singles, acted in films including 'Zoolander 2' (2016), 'I Feel Pretty' (2018), and 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar' (1995), and authored the memoir 'Naomi's Book' (1996) and 'Swan' (1997). In 2005, Campbell founded the nonprofit Fashion for Relief, raising funds for disaster relief, HIV/AIDS causes, and other charities. On May 25, 2021, she welcomed her daughter via surrogacy, keeping the father's identity private. Campbell has been a vocal advocate for diversity in fashion and is known as a social friend in elite networks. However, she has a documented history of legal issues related to assault: in 2000, pleaded guilty to assaulting her personal assistant, receiving five years' probation and anger management; in 2006, pleaded guilty to assaulting her housekeeper with a phone, ordered to pay damages and attend counseling; in 2007, investigated for assaulting an officer at Heathrow Airport (charges dropped); and in 2015, settled a lawsuit from a paparazzo she allegedly assaulted in 2009. She has been criticized for her volatile temper and associations with figures like Vladimir Putin and Liberian ex-president Charles Taylor, testifying in his 2010 war crimes trial about receiving 'blood diamonds'.
