About
Michael Richard Pompeo, known as Mike Pompeo, is an American politician, lawyer, diplomat, and former military officer who served as the 70th U.S. Secretary of State from 2018 to 2021 and as the 4th Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2017 to 2018 under President Donald Trump. Prior to these roles, he was a U.S. Congressman representing Kansas's 4th district from 2011 to 2017. Born on December 30, 1963, in Santa Ana, California, Pompeo graduated first in his class from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1986 with a degree in engineering management, served five years as an Army captain, and earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1994. After practicing tax litigation in Washington, D.C., he moved to Kansas, where he co-founded Thayer Aerospace in 1997 and later Sentry International, amassing wealth through defense contracting.
In Congress, Pompeo was known as a fiscal conservative and Tea Party supporter with assignments on the Intelligence and Energy committees. As CIA Director, he oversaw operations amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions, engaged in intelligence sharing, and maintained close coordination with Israeli intelligence agencies. As Secretary of State, he was a staunch ally of President Trump and a key architect of the Abraham Accords. He advocated hardline policies toward Iran, including withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and implementing "maximum pressure" sanctions, while maintaining a strong pro-Israel stance. In 2019, Pompeo declared West Bank settlements "not inconsistent with international law," citing legal arguments from the Kohelet policy forum. He also criticized China on issues of human rights and trade, reflecting his hawkish views. In September 2018, he appointed Zalmay Khalilzad as Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation.
Pompeo is a devout evangelical Christian with ties to evangelical pro-Israel networks and organizations such as ACT! for America and its leader Brigitte Gabriel. He is married to Susan Pompeo since 1986, and they have one son. After leaving public office, he engaged in speaking, consulting, and board roles, authored a memoir titled "Never Give an Inch" in 2023, and has positioned himself as a potential contender for the 2024 presidential election. He has spoken at Jewish leadership events such as Tikvah's Jewish Leadership Conference in 2022. Throughout his career, Pompeo has blended military discipline, business acumen, and conservative ideology, though he has faced controversies involving alleged ethical lapses, politicization of intelligence, and his role in the Ukraine impeachment proceedings.
