About
Charles Ernest Grassley, commonly known as Chuck Grassley, is a long-serving American politician and the senior United States Senator from Iowa, representing the state since 1981 as a member of the Republican Party. Born on September 17, 1933, in New Hartford, Iowa, Grassley grew up in a rural farming community, which shaped his lifelong advocacy for agricultural interests. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1955 and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the same institution in 1956, followed by postgraduate studies at the University of Iowa from 1957 to 1958. Before entering politics full-time, Grassley worked as a farmer, taught political science at Drake University in 1962 and Charles City Community College from 1967 to 1968, and served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1959 to 1975. He then represented Iowa's 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to 1981. His election to the U.S. Senate in 1980 marked the start of his over four-decade tenure in the upper chamber, making him one of the longest-serving senators in U.S. history. Grassley has held significant leadership positions, including chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee (2015-2021), during which he was involved in immigration reform efforts, and the Senate Finance Committee (2003-2007, 2015-2017, and 2021-2023), during which he led investigations into nonprofit finances and government waste. He served as President pro tempore of the Senate from 2019 to 2021 and again since 2025, and has been the Dean of the Senate since 2023. Known for his whistleblower protections, such as the 1986 amendments to the False Claims Act, Grassley has been a key figure in investigations into government waste, nonprofit finances, and corporate accountability. Throughout his career, Grassley has been recognized for his bipartisan efforts on issues like tax reform, healthcare, and agriculture policy, though he has faced criticism for his stances on gun control and environmental regulations. As a fiscal conservative, he has scrutinized nonprofit organizations and led probes into entities like the Clinton Foundation during his time as Finance Committee chairman. Grassley remains active in the Senate, focusing on Iowa's farming economy and national security matters, embodying a Midwestern work ethic in his approach to governance. Known for his folksy style and annual county meetings across Iowa, he remains an influential figure in Republican politics and Senate operations.
