Adam Bennett Schiff is an American lawyer, politician, and writer serving as the junior United States Senator from California since 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented California's 28th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2024, where he chaired the House Intelligence Committee and led the first impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump in 2019, serving as a lead impeachment manager, establishing him as a key and prominent figure in the Trump impeachments and related investigations. He gained national prominence for leading investigations into Russian election interference. Before entering Congress, Schiff served in the California State Senate from 1996 to 2000. Born on June 22, 1960, in Framingham, Massachusetts, to Edward and Sherrill Ann Schiff, he is of Jewish descent. His family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area during his childhood, shaping his early life before he pursued higher education and a legal career in Los Angeles. Schiff graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in 1978 and earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1982. Following law school, he clerked for Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles from 1987 to 1993, where he prosecuted significant cases, including those related to the collapse of the Northridge Savings and Loan. An unsuccessful candidate for the California State Assembly in 1994, Schiff entered politics successfully in 1996, winning a seat in the state senate. Throughout his career, he has focused on national security, intelligence reform, and protecting democratic institutions, authoring the Protecting Our Democracy Act to prevent executive power abuses.
