Entering politics with the Likud party, he was elected to the Knesset in 1999 and served continuously until 2022. During his tenure, he held several key ministerial positions, including Minister of Finance (2009-2013), Minister of Intelligence (2013-2020), Minister of Strategic Affairs (2013-2015 and 2020-2021), Minister of Energy (2015-2021), and Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy, and Water Resources. He also served as head of the National Security Council, where he was briefed on and advocated for cyber operations of Unit 8200, Israel's elite signals intelligence unit. His political career, largely under Netanyahu's governments, focused on national security, economic policy, and strategic affairs, often emphasizing Israel's defense capabilities and international relations. He played a significant role in shaping Israel's energy policies, particularly in natural gas development, and was involved in efforts to counter Iran's nuclear program. After leaving the Knesset, Steinitz transitioned to the private sector, currently serving as chairman of the board of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, a major Israeli defense contractor. His background in philosophy informs his analytical approach to policy, blending intellectual rigor with pragmatic governance. Steinitz remains an influential figure in Israeli security and political circles, known for his hawkish stance on security issues and his leadership within the Likud party.
