Yuval Shany (Hebrew: יובל שני), born on 1969-03-28, is an Israeli professor of international law and prominent scholar of humanitarian law, human rights, and public international law. He holds the Hersch Lauterpacht Chair in Public International Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and previously served as Dean of its Faculty of Law. Shany earned his LL.B. cum laude from the Hebrew University. His research interests include the application of the laws of war to cyber-attacks, state and corporate responsibilities for human rights in cyberspace, and the regulation of online surveillance. He has represented the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in legal matters. In 2018, Shany was elected Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, a body of scholars that reviews member states' compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. He also serves as deputy president and senior research fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. Shany is recognized as a jurist and legal scholar with significant influence in international law circles.
