The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a public university located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States, with a history dating back to 1876. Originally founded as the Iowa State Normal School, it evolved through names including Iowa State Teachers College before becoming the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. UNI has transformed from its origins as a teacher training institution and orphanage into a comprehensive university offering over 90 majors across five colleges: the College of Education, College of Business Administration, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, and College of Applied Human Sciences. The university focuses on education, liberal arts, business, and various professional programs, with particular emphasis on teacher preparation. UNI's business program, established in 1906 as the Commercial Department, holds AACSB accreditation achieved by less than five percent of the world's business schools. With a fall 2025 enrollment of 9,204 students, UNI emphasizes experiential learning, student involvement through over 200 clubs and organizations, and community engagement. The institution contributes to Iowa's higher education landscape through alumni in education, business, and public service, maintaining a commitment to accessible, high-quality education.
