Sundar Pichai (born Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India) is an Indian-American business executive who serves as CEO of Alphabet Inc. and Google, overseeing the company's global operations in technology, search, and cloud services, including major acquisitions, tech strategy, and vast operations in search, advertising, cloud computing, AI, and emerging technologies like quantum computing. He grew up in a middle-class family in Chennai (then Madras), where he developed an early interest in technology despite limited resources. Pichai earned a degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in 1993, then pursued advanced studies in the United States, obtaining a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from Stanford University in 1995, followed by an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. His career began at McKinsey & Company as a management consultant before joining Google in 2004.
At Google, Pichai rose through the ranks, leading product management for innovative tools like Google Chrome and Google Drive. In 2014, he was promoted to lead Android, YouTube, and other core products, and by 2015, he became CEO of Google. In 2019, he assumed the role of CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company. Under his leadership, Alphabet has navigated challenges including antitrust scrutiny, privacy concerns, and competition in AI, while expanding into areas like Waymo and healthcare.
Pichai is known for his calm demeanor, emphasis on innovation, and commitment to ethical AI development. He holds dual citizenship in India and the United States and resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is married to Anjali Pichai, whom he met at IIT, and they have two children.
