Stef (Ze'ev) Wertheimer was a German-born Israeli billionaire industrialist, investor, philanthropist, and politician. Born on July 16, 1926, in Kippenheim, Germany, to a Jewish family, he fled Nazi persecution with his family to Mandatory Palestine in 1937 at age 10. He attended Tel-Nordau School in Tel Aviv but dropped out at age 16 to apprentice in a camera repair store and later played a role in Israel's War of Independence. Wertheimer founded Iscar, a leading precision carbide metalworking tools company, which was sold to Berkshire Hathaway in 2006 for $4 billion, making the Wertheimers Israel's richest family as of 2013 with an estimated net worth of $5 billion. Known for his peace advocacy through economics, Wertheimer established industrial parks in Israel and neighboring countries to promote cooperation, particularly between Israel and Palestine. He served as a member of the Knesset and was recognized for initiatives like 'The Habit of Labor.' Wertheimer held dual nationality of Israel and Germany and was an institutional peer of Sami Sagol. He passed away on March 26, 2025.
