About
The United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) is a permanent select committee of the U.S. Senate responsible for overseeing the activities of the United States Intelligence Community, which includes agencies and bureaus of the federal government that provide intelligence information and analysis to leaders of the executive and legislative branches. Established in 1976 by the 94th Congress in response to revelations of intelligence abuses during the Church Committee investigations, the SSCI conducts authorization and oversight of intelligence programs, reviews intelligence budgets, and investigates matters related to foreign threats, counterintelligence, and national security. It plays a key role in shaping intelligence policy, ensuring compliance with the law, and protecting sources and methods while balancing transparency and security.
