About
Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Al Said (1921–1980) was a prominent member of Oman's ruling Al Said family and served as Prime Minister of Oman from 1970 to 1972. He was the brother of Sultan Said bin Taimur and uncle to Sultan Qaboos bin Said, playing a key role in the transitional government after Qaboos's bloodless coup in 1970 that ousted his father. As Prime Minister, Tariq helped lay the foundations for Oman's modernization and development during the early years of Qaboos's reign, overseeing initial reforms in administration and infrastructure amid the Dhofar Rebellion. However, he was dismissed in 1972 amid political tensions and went into exile, reportedly due to differences with Qaboos over governance styles; he was later reinstated and reconciled with the royal family. Tariq was the father of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, who succeeded Qaboos as Sultan of Oman in 2020, making Tariq a significant figure in the lineage of Omani leadership. Educated abroad, he had a background in business and diplomacy, including roles in Omani oil interests and international relations. His life reflected the turbulent shifts in Omani politics during the mid‑20th century, from traditional rule to modernization.
