Sanford 'Sandy' Cardin is a Baltimore native and leading figure in American Jewish philanthropy with decades of experience in nonprofit leadership. He earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Cardin served as President of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation for over two decades until his retirement in 2018, during which time the foundation became a major funder of initiatives strengthening Jewish life, peoplehood, and Israel engagement. He was instrumental in the founding of ROI. Beyond Schusterman, Cardin chaired the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) from 2013 to 2015 and has held influential board positions with organizations including Birthright Israel, the Foundation for Jewish Camp, Onward Israel, and the Mandel Institute for Jewish Leadership. His work has emphasized innovation, leadership development, and community building within the Jewish sector. Post-retirement, he remains active as a senior advisor and speaker on philanthropy and Jewish continuity.
