Russell Berrie (1933-2002) was an American businessman and philanthropist best known for founding Russ Berrie & Company, an innovative gift and toy company that revolutionized the industry with affordable, cute, and cuddly products. Born in the Bronx, New York, to a jewelry salesman, Berrie grew up in modest circumstances and demonstrated early entrepreneurial spirit. After attending New York University and the University of Florida in Gainesville, he entered the toy and gift sector as an independent sales representative when traditional employers rejected his ideas for low-priced merchandise. Starting in a tiny rented garage, he built the company into a global enterprise generating $300 million in annual revenue, specializing in stuffed animals, plush toys, and novelty gifts under brands like Russ Berrie. Berrie's business acumen extended to philanthropy, where he established the Russell Berrie Foundation in 1986, focusing on Jewish causes, pro-Israel initiatives, and diabetes research.
