About
Ruby Freeman is a former Georgia election worker who was falsely accused of ballot fraud, gaining national attention after being targeted in false 2020 election fraud claims. An African American woman and grandmother, she served as a temporary poll worker at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Fulton County, during the 2020 presidential election counting process. Videos taken out of context by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, including Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, falsely portrayed her and her daughter Shaye Moss as committing ballot fraud, leading to death threats, harassment, and emotional distress that forced her to relocate for safety and quit her job. In response, Freeman and Moss filed defamation lawsuits in 2021, resulting in a federal jury awarding them $148 million in damages against Giuliani in December 2023. Giuliani later filed for bankruptcy, but a settlement in 2024 allowed Freeman and Moss to proceed with collecting assets. Freeman testified before the U.S. House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, detailing the severe impact of the false accusations, including racial animus in the threats she received. Her ordeal highlighted issues of election worker safety, the spread of election misinformation, and the human cost of political rhetoric. Freeman has since become an advocate for election integrity and protection of poll workers, and she continues to reside in Georgia.
