About
Ronald S. Liebowitz is an American academic administrator and historian specializing in modern European and Russian history. He earned a B.A. in history from Columbia University in 1976 and a Ph.D. in history from Brandeis University in 1981. After completing his doctorate, he served as an instructor at Harvard University and then as an assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis from 1982 to 1993. In 1993, he joined Brandeis as director of the American Studies Program, later becoming chair of the History Department in 1996, associate provost in 1999, and provost and dean of the faculty from 2002 to 2011. Following his provostship, he returned to teaching and research at Brandeis before being appointed as the eighth president of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, on July 1, 2016, succeeding Frederick M. Lawrence. As president, Liebowitz is responsible for the university's strategic direction, academic programming, fundraising, and campus development, including professional collaborations such as with philanthropist Lynn Schusterman, and reports to the Board of Trustees.
