About
Lynn Schusterman (born Lynn Rothschild on January 21, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American billionaire philanthropist of Jewish descent, chair of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, and co-founder and president of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation. Raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, she comes from a family of German Jewish immigrants who arrived in the United States in the 1800s. Her parents were Wes Rothschild and Amelia Mayer, and she learned the value of philanthropy from her father, who emphasized giving back to the community. She married Charles Schusterman in 1962, and together they co-founded Samson Resources Company, one of the largest privately held oil and gas production companies in the United States, through which they built considerable wealth.
Following Charles’s death in 2000, Lynn and their daughter Stacy Schusterman managed the family business and energy assets, culminating in the 2011 sale of most of Samson Resources to a KKR-led group for $7.2 billion, greatly enhancing their philanthropic endowments. The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, co-founded around 1998–1999, holds over $2 billion in assets and has awarded more than $1 billion in grants. The foundation is a major donor to pro-Israel groups such as AIEF and focuses its giving on Jewish identity, community resilience, Israel engagement, social justice, education, child welfare, criminal justice reform, equality, and inclusion for the LGBTQ community in both the U.S. and Israel, with a particular emphasis on Jewish education and Israel engagement programs. In 2010, Lynn pioneered funding only organizations with formal LGBTQ inclusion policies and is an outspoken advocate for inclusion and social justice.
Her philanthropy supports progressive Jewish causes including J Street and educational programs at Brandeis University, where she serves on the Board of Trustees and endowed the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies. The foundation also promotes civic engagement, leadership development, and support for vulnerable populations in Israel and the U.S. Lynn has been recognized as one of the world’s most influential Jewish philanthropists, with honors including induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame (2006), the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars Public Service Award (2008), and an honorary doctorate from Brandeis University (2021). Through Schusterman Family Investments, the family manages diverse investments to support philanthropic efforts advancing racial, gender, and economic equity in the U.S., as well as strengthening Jewish and Israeli communities. Her daughter Stacy serves as chair of the family philanthropies and was previously CEO of Samson Resources. Lynn Schusterman continues to influence networks through strategic giving in Jewish and broader communal causes.
