Red Cavaney (born February 26, 1943) is an American businessman and lobbyist. He began his career in public service, serving in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, where he contributed to policy development, particularly in energy and regulatory affairs. Following his government roles, Cavaney transitioned to the private sector, becoming the CEO of Ericson Yachts, a prominent manufacturer in the marine industry, where he managed operations and strategic growth during the late 20th century. In 1997, Cavaney was appointed President and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute (API), the leading trade association for the oil and natural gas industry, a position he held until 2009. During his tenure, he oversaw extensive lobbying efforts, communications strategies, and advocacy on behalf of the energy sector, addressing key issues such as environmental regulations, energy policy, and industry competitiveness. His leadership at API positioned him as an influential figure in shaping U.S. energy debates and influencing legislative outcomes. After retiring from API, Cavaney has remained active in consulting and advisory capacities within the energy and business communities, leveraging his extensive experience in government and industry to provide insights on policy and corporate strategy.
