About
Rafael 'Raful' Eitan (born Rafael Kaminsky; 1929-01-11 – 2004-11-23) was an Israeli general who served as the 11th Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces from 1978 to 1983. Born in Tel Adashim, a community in northern Mandatory Palestine, Eitan began his military career at age 16 by joining the Palmach, the elite strike force of the Haganah. He participated in the 1948 War of Independence, serving in the Harel Brigade where he was severely wounded in the battle of San Simon in Jerusalem. Eitan helped found the IDF's Paratroopers Brigade and commanded units during key conflicts, including the 1956 Suez Crisis. After rising through the ranks, he became Chief of Staff during a period of heightened security tensions. Retiring in 1983, he transitioned to politics, serving as a Knesset member for parties including Tzomet and Herut, and held ministerial positions such as Minister of Agriculture (1988-1991) and Minister of Environmental Quality (1991-1992). Known for his hawkish views, straightforward demeanor, and rural farmer background, Eitan was a polarizing figure admired for his military prowess but criticized for controversial statements on security and demographics. He died in a tractor accident on his farm in northern Israel.
