About
Peter Berkowitz (born 1959) is an American political scientist, legal scholar, and political philosopher known for his work in conservative intellectual circles. He served as the Director of Policy Planning at the United States Department of State from 2019 to 2021, where he acted as a key advisor to the Secretary of State and executive secretary of the department's Commission on Unalienable Rights. Berkowitz is the Tad and Dianne Taube Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He also serves as director of studies for The Public Interest Fellowship and is a columnist for RealClearPolitics. He holds a JD and a PhD in political science from Yale University, an MA in philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a BA in English literature from Swarthmore College. His academic and scholarly work focuses on political theory, constitutional law, and jurisprudence. Berkowitz is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a prominent conservative thinker and personal friend of Yoram Hazony.
