About
Paul Soros, born Pál Schwartz on June 5, 1926, in Budapest, Hungary, was a mechanical engineer, businessman, and the older brother of George Soros. He changed his family name to Soros in 1936 amid rising antisemitism as Hungary aligned with fascist powers. He attended a technical college in Hungary, where he excelled as an expert skier and star tennis player. Emigrating to the United States, he founded Soros Associates in 1956, an international engineering firm specializing in innovative designs for bulk handling systems, port development, and offshore terminals, with projects in over 90 countries worldwide as of 2013. Known as 'the invisible Soros' for maintaining a lower public profile than his brother, Paul Soros was also a philanthropist. With his wife Daisy, he established the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, providing financial support to immigrants and their children pursuing graduate studies. He passed away on June 15, 2013, at age 87.
