Paul Salem is a Lebanese-American scholar, musician, and non-profit executive, recognized as a leading authority on Middle East politics and affairs, including political transitions, governance, security, sectarian conflicts, civil war resolution, democratization, and U.S. foreign policy in the Levant, Egypt, and beyond. Born on September 26, 1963, he has built a career focused on analysis and commentary on regional dynamics in the Arab world. He is a prolific author, having contributed to numerous reports and articles as well as influential books such as 'Bitter Legacy: Ideology and Politics in the Arab World' and 'Escaping the Conflict Trap,' which are seminal texts for understanding the causes of civil wars and the shifting geopolitical orders of the Levant. Salem is uniquely recognized in the policy community for his secondary career as a composer and musician, specializing in a fusion of Arabic and Brazilian jazz. He currently serves as Vice President for International Engagement at the Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington, D.C., where he previously held the roles of President and CEO and senior vice president. He co-chairs the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and was the founding director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut (2006–2013). Salem founded Al-Monitor in 2012, serving as its founding CEO and editor-at-large, where he oversees coverage of Middle East news from multiple perspectives, and established the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS), Lebanon's premier public policy think tank. His professional background includes work as a political officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon; with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees; at the International Foundation for Election Systems; and as a consultant for various governments and organizations on Middle East issues.
