About
Elie Adib Salem (born 1930) is a prominent Lebanese academic, scholar, and diplomat with a distinguished career spanning education and government service. He began his academic tenure as a professor at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) before returning to Lebanon in 1962 to teach in the Political Science and Public Administration department at the American University of Beirut (AUB). At AUB, he advanced to Chairman of the Department from 1970 to 1974 and then served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1974 until 1982, establishing himself as a key figure in Lebanese higher education.
Salem transitioned into high-level politics, serving as former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon from 1982 to 1984 during a turbulent period in the country's history. He continued his advisory role as a foreign affairs advisor to the President of Lebanon from 1984 to 1988. Later, he returned to academia as President of the University of Balamand from 1993 until his retirement in 2018, further solidifying his legacy in Lebanese intellectual and diplomatic circles.
