Pindaros Roy Vagelos, commonly known as P. Roy Vagelos, is an American physician-scientist, biochemist, and business executive born on October 8, 1929, in Westfield, New Jersey. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with an AB in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950 and earned an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1954. Following his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Vagelos joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1956, where he rose to positions including Senior Surgeon and Section Head, establishing himself as a leader in biomedical research. Vagelos transitioned to corporate leadership, becoming president and chief executive officer of Merck & Co. in 1985 and chairman of the board in 1986. Under his stewardship, Merck advanced in pharmacotherapy and innovative research, solidifying its position as a pharmaceutical powerhouse. He retired as chairman and CEO, earning recognition as one of the leading research visionaries of his generation. Vagelos is also a noted philanthropist focused on biomedical research and has institutional affiliations, such as with Sami Sagol. Inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, Vagelos's career spans academia, government research, and industry, marked by contributions to science and medicine.
