Norman L. Eisen, also known as Norm Eisen, is an American attorney, author, diplomat, and ethics expert renowned for his work in government reform, anti-corruption efforts, and legal analysis. Born on November 11, 1960, he earned a B.A. from Brown University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991. Eisen's notable career in public service began during the Obama administration, where he served as Special Counsel and Special Assistant to the President for Ethics and Government Reform from January 2009 to January 2011. He then became the United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2011 to 2014, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and promoting democratic values. Eisen is a co-founder and former board chair of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), an organization dedicated to upholding ethical standards in government.
Following his diplomatic role, Eisen continued his influence in legal and policy spheres. He served as co-counsel for the House Judiciary Committee during the first impeachment inquiry and trial of President Donald Trump in 2019-2020. Currently, he is a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution (since February 2020), a CNN legal analyst, and co-founder of the States United Democracy Center, which works to protect democratic institutions and has pursued litigation against executive actions, including lawsuits filed in January 2025 against presidential orders signed by Trump. An accomplished author, Eisen has written four books, including 'The Last Palace: Europe's Turbulent Century in Five Lives and One Legendary House' (2018) and co-authored 'Overcoming Trumpery: How to Restore Ethics, the Rule of Law, and Democracy' (2022). In January 2025, he began co-authoring a Substack publication entitled 'The Contrarian' with columnist Jen Rubin, providing insights on ongoing litigation and legal processes.
