About
Barack Hussein Obama II (born August 4, 1961) is an American politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017, becoming the nation's first African American president and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. A prominent Democratic Party leader, he was previously a U.S. Senator from Illinois and a community organizer. His presidency faced targeted birtherism and other conspiracy theories questioning his identity and alleging associations with Islam and Marxists, alongside numerous lawsuits and criticism from conservative groups over policies on healthcare, immigration, and surveillance. His administration navigated the 2008 financial crisis through economic stimulus and financial regulatory reforms, consulting advisors such as Lawrence Summers and Paul Volcker. Domestically, he focused on social innovation, healthcare reform via the Affordable Care Act, progressive tax policies, ethics reform, climate change policies, counterterrorism, and civil liberties. In foreign policy, he emphasized diplomacy, multilateralism, and international relations, pursuing initiatives including the Iran nuclear deal, a pivot to Asia, and efforts to reset relations with Muslim communities—notably a 2009 Cairo speech criticized for comparing the Palestinian struggle to the Holocaust. His foreign policy also involved responses to global crises, drawing down U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, authorizing joint intelligence operations with Israel, and a Middle East policy aimed at strengthening U.S.-Israel relations despite tensions over Iran, alongside renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts in his second term, drawing criticism from neoconservatives. Known for his progressive policies, Obama remains a central figure in Democratic politics with significant influence on international relations. He has been a frequent target of conservative criticism and lawsuits, is a close friend of Ted Sarandos, has a content deal with Netflix, and remains a close political ally and advisor to Joe Biden. Post-presidency, he continues initiatives through the Obama Foundation, on whose board he serves, and he reappointed a member to the Kennedy Center board during his presidency.
