About
Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, commonly known as MBZ, is an Emirati royal and politician who has served as the third president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ruler of Abu Dhabi since 2022. Born on March 11, 1961, as the third son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, MBZ was groomed for leadership from a young age. He received his early education at schools in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi until the age of 18, after which he pursued military training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, graduating in 1979. MBZ ascended to the position of Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in 2004 following the death of his half-brother, and he became deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces. His presidency began after the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in May 2022, marking a continuation of the Al Nahyan family's dominance in UAE governance. MBZ has played a pivotal role in shaping the UAE's modern identity, overseeing economic diversification, foreign policy initiatives—including being instrumental in normalizing relations with Israel via the Abraham Accords—and military advancements, such as the UAE's involvement in regional conflicts like Yemen. Under his leadership, the UAE has strengthened ties with global powers, including receiving awards from figures like former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for political contributions, and he is a close ally of MBS (Mohammed bin Salman) in regional security. MBZ is married to Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, with whom he has nine children—four sons and five daughters. His rule emphasizes innovation, tolerance, and strategic international alliances, positioning the UAE as a key player in the Middle East while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
