About
Miguel McKelvey, born July 4, 1974, in Eugene, Oregon, grew up in a 'five-mother collective' with his family running the Eugene Weekly newspaper; he did not grow up with his father and described himself as a 'wild kid' who found structure through basketball and a strict high school coach. He graduated from South Eugene High School in 1992, briefly attended Colorado College before transferring to the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) in 1999 and played on the Oregon Ducks men's basketball team for two years (lettered in 1997), though rarely saw playing time. Prior to graduation, he worked as a busboy and spent summers at an Alaskan fish processing plant. After college, he co-founded the online language learning platform English, baby! while in Tokyo, growing it to 25 employees, and later worked at Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture in New York, managing American Apparel retail roll-outs. An architect and entrepreneur, McKelvey co-founded Green Desk with Adam Neumann in 2008 and co-founded WeWork in 2010. At WeWork, he served as chief culture officer from 2017 until departing in June 2020, overseeing construction, architecture, web design, and culture, and was involved in initiatives like WeLive, Rise by We, and WeGrow; he was named one of Fast Company's Most Creative People in 2019. Post-WeWork, in 2022 he acquired a $10 million controlling stake in American Giant apparel; he is co-founder of Unbound (living.unbound), a preventative health startup in the UK, and co-founder and partner at NAYAH; he is also involved with UK50 Basketball.
