About
The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), commonly known as the Metropolitan Police, Met Police, or the 'Met', is London's territorial police force responsible for law enforcement and crime prevention within Greater London. Established in 1829, it is often referred to as 'Scotland Yard' or 'the Yard' after its original 19th-century headquarters. The force was previously under the direct authority of the Home Secretary until 2000. Beyond its local duties, the MPS also undertakes specialised tasks throughout the United Kingdom, including counter-terrorism and the protection of the monarch, royal family, governmental officials, and other designated figures. It is involved in major investigations such as Operation Weeting. The Metropolitan Police has faced legal actions, including instances where individuals sued the police for wrongful arrest and received out-of-court settlements.
