About
Matan Kahana (Hebrew: מתן כהנא; born 29 July 1972) is an Israeli politician, retired Israel Defense Forces (IDF) colonel, and former fighter pilot. He began his military career as a combat soldier in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit for three and a half years before joining the Israeli Air Force in January 1994. There, he completed flight training, qualified as a fighter pilot, and later commanded an F-16 squadron. Kahana entered politics after retiring from the military, joining the New Right party, which allied with Yamina. Elected to the Knesset in 2019, he served as Minister of Religious Services in Naftali Bennett's 2021-2022 coalition government, where he pursued reforms to modernize religious services and reduce rabbinical control, drawing criticism from ultra-Orthodox communities. In 2022, he joined the National Unity Party alliance.
