About
Justin Pierre James Trudeau, born on December 25, 1971, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is a Canadian politician who served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada from 2015 to 2025 and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. The son of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau, he grew up in the public eye amid his father's political leadership and family challenges. Before entering politics, he pursued diverse careers including teaching high school French, history, and drama in Vancouver; working as a snowboard instructor; acting in films and television; and engaging in humanitarian work. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2005. His political career began in 2008 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Papineau in Montreal. He became Liberal Party leader in 2013 and led the party to a majority government in the 2015 federal election, defeating Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Trudeau advocated for progressive policies focusing on climate action, indigenous rights, international trade and diplomacy, immigration, social justice, Indigenous reconciliation, legalizing cannabis, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. His tenure included initiatives like the Canada Child Benefit and carbon pricing, but was also marked by controversies including the SNC-Lavalin affair, blackface incidents from his youth, foreign election interference allegations, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic including the invocation of the Emergencies Act during the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests. He resigned as Liberal leader and Prime Minister in 2025 amid declining popularity and electoral challenges. He has been married to Sophie Grégoire since 2005, with whom he has three children, and has advocated for mental health awareness. Throughout his career, Trudeau has been both praised for modernizing Canadian politics and criticized for ethical lapses, elitism, and fiscal policies, and he has often been targeted by conservative media.
