About
Thomas Jonathan 'Jon' Ossoff, born February 16, 1987, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party serving as the senior United States Senator from Georgia (D) since January 2021. He is the youngest incumbent U.S. senator and Georgia's first Jewish senator. Raised in Georgia, Ossoff was mentored by civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, beginning his civic engagement at age 16 by volunteering in Lewis's congressional office, which profoundly shaped his career in public service, journalism, and politics. Before entering elected office, Ossoff worked as an investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker, producing reports on human trafficking, war crimes, and child welfare abuses, and served as CEO and managing director of a media company. He holds a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service (2009) and a master's degree from the London School of Economics (2013). Ossoff gained national prominence in 2017 as the Democratic nominee in a special election for Georgia's 6th congressional district, narrowly losing but energizing Democratic turnout, and previously ran as a congressional candidate. He won his Senate seat in a January 2021 runoff election, flipping the seat blue alongside Raphael Warnock and contributing to Democrats' Senate majority.
