About
James Ernesto Morales Cabrera, commonly known as Jimmy Morales, is a Guatemalan politician, actor, comedian, film director, film producer, and television actor who served as the 50th President of Guatemala from 2016 to 2020. Born on March 18, 1969, in Guatemala City to José Everardo Morales Orellana and a modest family background, Morales grew up in poverty. By age ten, he and his brother Sammy accompanied their grandfather to sell bananas at the market in Santa Lucía, Cotzumalguapa. He rose to fame in the entertainment industry alongside his brother in the popular TV comedy show 'Moralejas' (Morals), and appeared in films such as 'Fe' (2011) and 'Looking for Palladin' (2008). An Evangelical Christian from a poor family, Morales entered politics as a political outsider with the campaign slogan 'Neither corrupt, nor a thief' (Ni corrupto, ni ladrón), winning the presidency in a runoff against Sandra Torres. As president, Morales followed the United States in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, aligning with influences from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His administration faced various challenges. Prior to politics, he reportedly holds degrees in Business Administration from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and in theology, though institutional details for the latter are unclear.
