About
Jeremy Ben-Ami (born June 11, 1962) is an American lawyer, political activist, and lobbyist known for his leadership in liberal pro-Israel advocacy. He is the founder, president, and CEO of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel, pro-peace organization established in 2007, which he has led since 2008. J Street promotes a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through diplomatic and peaceful means and often positions itself as a liberal alternative to more hawkish pro-Israel groups like AIPAC. The organization advocates for a two-state solution, criticizes Israeli settlements, and at times takes positions critical of certain Israeli policies and hardline approaches. Ben-Ami also co-founded and serves as the executive director of JStreetPAC, which endorses and supports federal candidates aligned with these policies.
Ben-Ami's career encompasses government service, strategic communications, and nonprofit leadership, reflecting a commitment to progressive Jewish and Israeli causes. He holds an A.B. in Government from Harvard College (1984) and a J.D. from New York University School of Law (1987). In the Clinton administration, he held senior roles including deputy director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, staff director for the National Security Council, and Domestic Policy Advisor. In the private sector, he has been Senior Vice President for Law and Government Affairs at Fannie Mae, Vice President at Fenton Communications, Managing Director at Brunswick Group, and Senior Vice President at AND Campaigns. In the late 1990s, Ben-Ami lived in Israel for nearly three years, where he founded Ben-Or Communications, supporting Israeli nonprofits and politicians, and served as Communications Director for the New Israel Fund.
As a prominent figure in liberal Jewish advocacy, Ben-Ami has actively influenced U.S. policy toward Israel and the Middle East, emphasizing American leadership in peace efforts. His work frequently faces opposition from more conservative pro-Israel factions, including adversarial relations with figures like Sarah Stern. Through J Street's lobbying and political action initiatives, Ben-Ami continues to shape debates on U.S.-Israel relations.
