About
Jacqueline Jill Smith, Baroness Smith of Malvern (known as Jacqui Smith or JJ to friends), born on 3 November 1962 in Malvern, Worcestershire, England, was educated at Hertford College, Oxford, where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, before training as a teacher at Worcester College of Higher Education in the mid-1980s. She worked as a teacher of economics and business studies prior to entering politics. A member of the Labour Party, she was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Redditch in the 1997 general election, holding the seat until 2010. She rose through government ranks with early roles in education and employment policy. Smith served as the first female Home Secretary of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2009 under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, responsible for immigration, counter-terrorism policies, and other domestic security matters. Her tenure included controversial decisions such as banning American radio host Michael Savage from entering the UK in 2009, prompting Savage to sue her. She lost her Redditch seat in the 2010 general election amid the MPs' expenses scandal, in which she was criticized for claiming parliamentary allowances for items including pornographic films watched by her husband, Richard Timney, whom she married in 1987; she later apologized and repaid some claims. Following her defeat, Smith became a broadcaster and commentator. In 2019, she was appointed a life peer as Baroness Smith of Malvern and has served in the House of Lords. Since 2024, she has been Minister of State for Skills in the Labour government.
