Ismail Haniyeh was a prominent Palestinian politician and senior leader in the Islamist militant group Hamas, serving as head of the group's political bureau and overseeing its international relations and funding networks until his assassination in 2024. Born on January 29, 1962, in the Al-Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to parents displaced from Ashkelon during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Haniyeh grew up in poverty amid the challenges of Palestinian refugee life. He became involved in Islamist activism during his university years, joining the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Islamic Center and later co-founding Hamas in 1987 during the First Intifada. Haniyeh's early career included teaching Arabic literature and serving as dean of the Islamic University of Gaza's Faculty of Islamic Sharia, where he was dismissed by Israeli authorities in 1987 for his political activities.

Haniyeh rose to prominence in Hamas's political wing, serving as a close aide to founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Following Hamas's victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, he was appointed Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority in March 2006, leading a short-lived unity government that collapsed amid factional violence with Fatah. After Hamas's takeover of Gaza in June 2007, Haniyeh became the de facto leader of the enclave until 2017, when he was elected chairman of Hamas's Political Bureau. During his tenure, he navigated international isolation, blockade, and multiple conflicts with Israel, while engaging in diplomatic efforts from exile in Qatar and Turkey. Haniyeh was known for his pragmatic approach to politics, balancing militancy with calls for long-term truces.

On July 31, 2024, Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, during a visit for the inauguration of Iran's president, in an attack widely attributed to Israel amid escalating regional tensions. His death marked a significant blow to Hamas's leadership structure, prompting vows of retaliation from the group and its allies.
