Herzl "Herzi" Halevi (born December 17, 1967, in Jerusalem, Israel) is a retired Israeli military officer who served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the highest-ranking military position, from January 16, 2023, until his retirement on March 5, 2025. He enlisted in the IDF in 1985 and served in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit, participating in operations such as the 1988 abduction of Sheikh Obeid in Lebanon. Throughout his career, Halevi commanded the Egoz Reconnaissance Unit, the 35th Paratroopers Brigade, the 91st Division in Gaza, and held key leadership roles including head of the IDF's Southern Command, head of the Military Intelligence Directorate overseeing intelligence units including Unit 8200, and Deputy Chief of the General Staff. As Chief of the General Staff, he oversaw all military branches, operations, strategy, and personnel, including intelligence, and directed critical military responses to events such as the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and subsequent conflicts in Gaza and against Hezbollah. He is responsible for military operations and coordination with intelligence agencies. Halevi holds a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration and a master's degree in political science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since retiring, he has engaged in discussions on national security and military strategy.
