About
Gavin C. E. Stuart is a Canadian gynecologic oncologist, born in Manitoba, Canada. He attended medical school at the University of Western Ontario (now Western University), followed by postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in 1980 and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS). His career includes faculty appointments at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, where he served as director and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1999, he was appointed Vice-President of the Alberta Cancer Board. He later became a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Dean of Medicine at the University of British Columbia from 2003 to 2015, and Vice-Provost Health at UBC from 2009 to 2016. He is also a former Chair of the Board of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada and co-editor of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. In 2008, Dr. Cathy Popadiuk sued him for defamation over a 2002 letter criticizing her research, teaching, and patient treatment; an independent review found his allegations led to her losing her associate dean position, staff support, and decision-making role, resulting in workplace harassment and unfair treatment, though the lawsuit outcome is not publicly available.
