About
Sir Frank P. Lowy AC is an Australian-Israeli billionaire businessman, born in Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) to Jewish parents of Slovak-Hungarian origin. He endured the Holocaust, being forced into a ghetto in Hungary during World War II. In 1946, he escaped to France and boarded the ship Yagur as part of the Haganah, arriving in Mandatory Palestine where he fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He migrated to Australia in 1952, settling in Sydney with family members involved in the smallgoods business. Lowy co-founded Westfield Corporation with John Saunders around 1960, transforming it into a global shopping centre giant. He served as Executive Chairman for 50 years and Non-Executive Chairman until its 2018 acquisition by Unibail-Rodamco for US$29.3 billion in assets under management across the US, UK, and Europe (now Scentre Group/Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield). A prominent philanthropist, he founded the Lowy Institute for International Policy in 2003 and chairs it, and manages the Lowy Family Group with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Sydney. He holds dual citizenship, has been recognized with the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and a knighthood for his contributions to business and philanthropy, and was a partner in the World Trade Center lease.
