Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, born October 13, 1958, is an Israeli Modern Orthodox rabbi, philosopher, and author. He serves as President of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a pluralistic Jewish think tank and educational organization with campuses in Jerusalem and North America, where he holds the Richard and Sylvia Kaufman Family Chair in Jewish Philosophy. Hartman is a prominent essayist, blogger, and lecturer on Israeli politics, policy, Judaism, and the Jewish community. His notable books include 'The Boundaries of Judaism,' 'Putting God Second: How to Save Religion from Itself,' and co-edited works like 'Judaism and the Challenges of Modern Life.' The institute receives major financial support from donors such as Lynn Schusterman. Hartman studied at Yeshivat Netiv Meir and Yeshivat Har Etzion before enlisting in the Israeli Armored Corps, where he commanded a tank during the First Lebanon War in 1982. After the war, he returned to the United States, pursued advanced studies including an MA in political philosophy from New York University, served as a rabbi at a community center, and later earned a PhD in Jewish philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
