Background
David Axelrod is a prominent American political strategist, commentator, and former journalist. Raised in a Reform Jewish household on New York's Lower East Side, he developed an early passion for politics after witnessing a John F. Kennedy speech at age five. He moved to Chicago in 1972 to attend the University of Chicago, which became his lifelong professional base.
Career
Axelrod began his career in journalism at the Chicago Tribune, where he became the youngest political writer in the paper's history at age 27. In 1984, he transitioned into political consulting, joining Paul Simon's U.S. Senate campaign. He subsequently founded Axelrod & Associates (now AKP&D Message and Media), specializing in progressive causes and the campaigns of African American candidates, including Harold Washington and Deval Patrick.
He is best known as the chief strategist for Barack Obama's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Following the 2008 victory, he served as Senior Advisor to the President. Since leaving the White House, he has become a staple of political media and academia.
