About
Chris Evans, born Christopher Paul Evans on 14 May 1958 in Melbourne, Victoria, is a former Australian Labor Party politician. He served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1998 until his retirement in 2013. Evans held several senior ministerial positions in the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments, including Minister for Immigration and Citizenship from 2007 to 2010, where he oversaw significant immigration policy reforms and was involved in decisions such as sanctions related to figures like Michael Savage. He later served as Minister for Trade (2010-2012) and Special Minister of State (2011-2013). Prior to entering federal politics, Evans was deeply involved in the trade union movement and Labor Party organization. He worked as a labourer after leaving school at age 15 and rose to become the Western Australian State Secretary of the Australian Labor Party. His background in union activism and party administration shaped his political career, making him a key powerbroker in Western Australian Labor politics. Following his retirement from parliament, Evans has maintained a lower public profile but has occasionally provided commentary on political and policy issues, particularly in areas like immigration and industrial relations.
