About
Ben-Zion 'Bentzi' Gopstein (born September 10, 1969) is an Israeli far-right activist and a prominent student of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, whose ideology has influenced Gopstein's lifelong commitment to Jewish nationalism and opposition to assimilation. He founded and leads Lehava ('Flame'), an anti-assimilationist organization established in 2005 that campaigns against interfaith relationships, particularly Jewish-Arab marriages, and promotes segregationist policies. Gopstein has been a vocal opponent of Arab integration in Israeli society, organizing protests and initiatives to prevent what he views as threats to Jewish identity. Residing in the Kiryat Arba settlement in the West Bank, he served as a member of the local council from 2010 to 2013, aligning with other hardline figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir, the current leader of the Otzma Yehudit party.
Gopstein's activities have drawn significant controversy and legal scrutiny. In November 2019, he was indicted on charges of incitement to terrorism, violence, and racism stemming from speeches and writings that allegedly promoted hatred against Arabs. In 2023, he was convicted of incitement to racism but acquitted on the more serious charges of incitement to violence and terrorism. His organization, Lehava, has been accused of orchestrating anti-Arab campaigns and obstructing humanitarian aid. In April 2024, Gopstein was personally sanctioned by the U.S. Department of State and the European Union for his role in promoting settler violence and extremism, following earlier sanctions on Lehava itself in May 2023. These measures highlight international concerns over his influence in far-right networks. Additionally, undisclosed financial ties to the Central Fund of Israel have been reported, potentially funding his operations.
Gopstein remains a polarizing figure in Israeli politics, often collaborating with ultranationalist groups and criticizing government policies perceived as lenient toward Palestinians. His rhetoric and actions have been condemned by human rights organizations for fostering division and extremism, yet he maintains support among settler communities and far-right factions.
