Avi Weiss is a former Deputy Police Superintendent (נצ"מ בדימוס) in Israel, who served as a tanker in the IDF during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, where he was captured by Egyptian forces and endured torture. He operates the Telecom News blog (https://www.telecomnews.co.il), publishing articles critical of police and prosecution in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trials, alleging fabrication ('תפירת תיקים'), misconduct by Unit עמ"מ 5, and leaks. He maintains a social media presence on Twitter/X under @Motty53 and is a frequent guest on Kanret Barashi's 'אולפן הפתוח' (Open Studio) show. As a vocal pro-Netanyahu supporter and Israeli activist, he has focused exposés on Cases 1000, 2000, and 4000. In July 2022, alongside journalist-activist Eli Tzipori, he was accused of cyber-harassment for publicizing personal information (address, family details) of Netanyahu Case 1000 witness Hadas Klein. In July 2023, the State Attorney's Cyber Department announced intent to prosecute. His first court hearing occurred in October 2024, with the defense claiming selective enforcement. In December 2024, he filed a defense in Klein's NIS 1 million defamation lawsuit, arguing the publications were true, factual, and journalistic, and submitted a list of media publications on the Netanyahu trial to argue for equal prosecution of journalists.
