About
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, is a landmark and significant U.S. federal healthcare reform statute (Public Law 111-148) enacted on March 23, 2010, when it was signed into law by President Barack Obama. It represents a signature policy of the Obama administration amid intense partisan debate. The law was designed to overhaul the American health insurance system by expanding health insurance coverage to millions of Americans, reducing healthcare costs, reforming the healthcare system and insurance markets, implementing consumer protections and regulations, and mandating insurance coverage. It also includes provisions on contraception that have sparked religious liberty debates and has been opposed by many Republican states, including South Carolina under Governor Nikki Haley.
