Xavier Becerra is an American attorney and politician who served as the 33rd Attorney General of California from January 2017 to March 2021, and as the 25th United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from March 19, 2021, to January 20, 2025, becoming the first Latino to hold the position. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented California's 34th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 2017, where he rose to prominence as Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus from 2013 to 2017. Born in Sacramento, California, to Mexican immigrant parents, Becerra earned degrees from Stanford University and Stanford Law School. He began his legal career in 1984 working with legal aid organizations representing individuals with mental health issues, first in Massachusetts and later in California. Entering politics in the 1980s, he served in the California State Assembly before his long tenure in Congress.
