About
William (Bill) English is a 43-year-old political economist specializing in ethics, education, public policy, and institutional corruption. He resides in Washington, DC, and is a Professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business (2016-present). English holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from Duke University (2010), an M.St. in Ethics from Oxford University (Worcester College), and B.S. with Distinction in Economics and B.A. in Mathematics from Duke University. Prior roles include positions at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics (2011-2016) and a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Brown University's Political Theory Project (2010-2011). His research, published in journals such as American Political Science Review, Journal of Theoretical Politics, and Business Ethics Quarterly, covers institutional corruption, ethical persuasion, genetics and politics, nudging, and trust. Notably, he conducted a national survey on defensive gun use, cited in the Supreme Court case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022) and gun rights lawsuits; the survey originated from NRA-backed litigation, with English receiving payments as an expert but declining to disclose funders. Critics, including a 2024 New York Times investigation, alleged methodological flaws like biased question wording and data cherry-picking, which he defended in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. He has also researched right-to-carry laws and filed briefs with the Center for Human Liberty. In public service, English was appointed by President Trump to the National Council on the Humanities in 2019 (Senate-confirmed August 1, 2019; term 2019-2024) and remains one of four members as of October 2025 following White House dismissals.
