About
Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy, born on January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, into a Jewish family (reflecting his Jewish heritage), is the sixth and current President of Ukraine, serving since 2019. He is a Ukrainian politician, former comedian, actor, screenwriter, and film producer. His parents are Rymma Zelenska, a retired engineer, and Oleksandr Zelenskyy, a professor and head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at Kryvyi Rih National University. As a child, Zelenskyy's family briefly relocated to Erdenet, Mongolia, for four years due to his father's work before returning to Kryvyi Rih, where he grew up as a native Russian speaker and later became fluent in Ukrainian and English. Zelenskyy entered the entertainment industry after university, co-founding the comedy troupe Kvartal 95 in 1997, which produced TV shows, films, and the hit series 'Servant of the People' (2015-2019), in which he played a fictional president, boosting his popularity and leading to his real-life political entry. In 2018, inspired by his TV role, Zelenskyy formed the Servant of the People party and announced his presidential candidacy, running on an anti-corruption platform as a political outsider. He won a landslide victory in the 2019 election, defeating incumbent Petro Poroshenko with over 73% of the vote in the runoff. Taking office amid the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, which began with Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and invasion of Donbas, Zelenskyy has led Ukraine through the full-scale Russian invasion starting February 24, 2022. His wartime leadership, marked by defiance, international diplomacy, and rallying global support, has elevated his profile worldwide as a wartime leader advocating for Western support against Russia. He has faced domestic criticism over martial law extensions and economic challenges. Zelenskyy is married to Olena Zelenska since 2003, with whom he has two children, and continues to reside in Kyiv.
