About
A select committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, established by H.Res. 503 passed on June 30, 2021, during the 117th Congress, to investigate the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, including the events leading up to the attack, the security response, and the broader context of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) with Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as vice chair, the committee conducted an extensive investigation, interviewing over 650 witnesses, issuing nearly 100 subpoenas, and holding public hearings starting July 27, 2022. It released an 845-page final report on December 22, 2022, which included criminal referrals to the Department of Justice against former President Donald Trump for offenses including obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make a false statement, and inciting or assisting insurrection, among others. The committee ceased operations at the end of the 117th Congress in January 2023 and is no longer standing.
