About
Thomas Earl Emmer Jr., born March 3, 1961, is the U.S. Representative for Minnesota's 6th congressional district and serves as House Majority Whip. Raised in Edina, Minnesota, he attended Our Lady of Grace Catholic Grade School and graduated from Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights. Emmer attended Boston College before earning a B.A. in Political Science (or History and Political Science) from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1984 and a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law (now Mitchell Hamline School of Law) in 1988. After law school, he practiced law, founded his own firm, and balanced his career with family life, coaching hockey, and public service on the city councils of Independence (around 1988) and Delano, Minnesota (around 2002). Elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2004 for District 19B, he served three terms until 2010, when he ran unsuccessfully for Minnesota Governor as the Republican-endorsed candidate, losing after an automatic recount. Emmer entered federal politics in 2015 and, as of recent records, is sworn into his sixth term in the U.S. House. He previously chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee (2019-2022), helping Republicans regain the House majority. A member of the House Financial Services Committee, he serves as Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence, advocating strongly for the cryptocurrency industry. He has also worked as a lobbyist and radio personality. Married to Jacquie for nearly 40 years with seven children, the family resides in Delano, Minnesota.
